Is the India-US FTA dream officially dead?

Recent reports indicate that the highly anticipated India-US bilateral trade agreement has officially been relegated to the back burner. With the Trump administration actively threatening a fresh wave of steep tariffs on Indian goods compounded by aggressive investigations into excess industrial capacity and supply chain labour standards, negotiations have hit a significant standstill. 

Faced with this mounting protectionist pressure from Washington, New Delhi is shifting its economic strategy. Instead of rushing into an unfavourable deal that compromises sensitive domestic sectors like agriculture, India is proactively seeking alternative options for diversification.

As geopolitical friction alters economic priorities, reports suggest that the Ministry of Commerce is likely to scale back its dedicated resources and personnel previously assigned to the US trade desk. By redirecting bureaucratic focus toward more cooperative global partners, India aims to insulate its exporters from impending American levies and build a more resilient, multi-aligned trade network.
