Within both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce, the earlier zeal for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and rapid diplomatic reconciliation has given way to a cautious, deliberate inertia.

Where the initial tenure of the U.S. administration generated optimistic bilateral momentum, current engagement is defined by deep structural skepticism. Indian policymakers appear increasingly wary of unpredictable tariff threats, aggressive unilateralism, and high-pressure transactional demands that threaten core domestic interests. Rather than pursuing ambitious, sweeping economic alignment, New Delhi is actively pivoting toward a strict, issue-based pragmatism.

This emergent lethargy is far from accidental paralysis; it represents a calculated policy calibration. Bureaucrats are deliberately slowing overall momentum to shield critical domestic sectors and preserve fundamental strategic autonomy. By treating every trade negotiation as an isolated, transactional exchange, India signals that early political warmth has dissolved into cold-eyed realism. Washington is no longer approached as a predictable long-term partner, but as a volatile power requiring constant, carefully guarded hedging.
